The Two Party System: Un-Americanizing Today's Voters

             Currently, in the United States, there are two major political parties, the Republican Party, and Democratic Party. These two parties effectively dominate all of the other minor parties. Therefore, the United States is considered to have a "two-party system." The existence of this system can be explained by looking into history. During the period in history where the Constitution was first being ratified, two main parties developed. Those parties were: the Federalist Party and the Anti-Federalist Party. The two-party system was informally adopted into the American governmental system through tradition, and by two main social opinions.
             The two-party system is not the best system to run elections on. This system only gives voters a choice between two candidates for president. Minor parties gain little or no support, due to the factor of voter apathy. Due to the existence of many new majority opinions, these two parties try as much as possible to generalize their positions on most issues. This generalization blurs their opinions enough to try and gain the general majority vote, which is not truly supported by the majority opinion. The system does not let citizens express their true opinions but merely lets them choose between the opinions of the two parties, which only aim at winning the control of the government. The system does not enforce the basic principle of American government set by the forefathers so many years ago. Some argue that the US government is not a two-party, but a multi-party system, however, this is not true. The existence of the minor parties does give voters other choices, but the two major parties dominate these lesser parties. The lesser parties cannot survive in this system whose motto seems to be "only the strong survive."
