Description of a Baseball

The baseball is the ball used in the sport of Baseball, which is played by two opposing teams of nine players (10 in smaller leagues), alternating batting and fielding. The baseball is the most important object in the sport because the entire game revolves around the ball’s location within the playing field. There are many types of baseballs available to the public; this is due to the vast difference in ages of baseball players. The ball described in this paper is the one used by the players and coaches of the Major League Baseball Association TM.

The standards for the modern baseball were not regulated until the late 1880’s. It was during this era when the National League of Professional Base Ball (National League) and the American Association (American League) were the dominant figures and set the rules and regulations in which several other leagues adhered to. These two leagues would later combine to from the Major League Baseball Association TM. The first types of baseballs were constructed from yarn wound around a cork center with two stripes of horsehide or cowhide held tightly together by stitches also known as the seam. The ball is now constructed with varying cork types varying in hardness. The

The shell of the ball is white in color with the seam being red. It is specially designed for the Major leagues. The seam is the continuous stitching where the two separate shells meet. The wool is held together with glue, which is specially made for the ball. The inner layer (core) is composed of a cushioned cork. If the windings were constructed of a solid substance, the ball would dent after one hit and would be unusable. The glue also holds the windings to the cork center and to the leather shell. The color white is used for the shell because at first many teams wore colored jerseys. The second function of the windings is to add firmness to the baseball. The lightweight of the cork is also important to keep the ball within the regulated five to 5 ¼ ounces.

A baseball is a spherical form with one layer constructed on top of the previous layer. Different materials have different firmness and wool makes a Major League baseball the hardest ball out of any used. The middle layer is constructed of wool string wound tightly around the core.
