The India Video

In the video describing ancient India the filmmaker’s goal was to educate the audience by showing various places that still exist in India and describing the cultures of those times. The tone of the coverage was serious and straightforward with no biases made from the individuals interviewed. They all spoke from an educator’s point of view, which helped the video’s credibility. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to understand what the commentators were saying due to their thick accents and the audience’s limited knowledge on the subject. The text is a much better coverage source because one can read, and if necessary reread, the text at leisure to learn and understand the ancient Indian civilizations. This type of video should not play a large role in the overall education process for several reasons. The video was extremely difficult to understand, everything was explained very fast and no time was given to pause for note taking, and the names and places mentioned were not spelled for the audience so there was no way one could look up the information when they returned home.

The video should not play a large role in the overall educational process because it was extremely difficult to understand, everything was explained very fast and no time was given to pause for note taking, and the names and places mentioned were not spelled for the audience so there was no way one could look up the information when they returned home. For example, the video discussed the rise and spread of Islam and the assassination of Mohammad, but spoke so rapidly none of the even most attentitive members of the class could explain any details. They spoke about their individual fields of expertise and gave no opinions on any of the subjects, only facts. These commentaries were very interesting to hear, however, they were also very difficult to understand. When trying to take notes while watching a video it becomes very distracting. Looking around at the rest of the audience’s faces, one can tell that there was definitely a sign of relief that the video had ended. One focuses so much on the notes that the attention is taken away from the video and invariably becomes an unpleasant and unnerving experience of trying to constantly figure out what one has missed. Most people relate better to word recognition and with the text one can go at their own pace. It also acknowledges the global presents of Buddhism and Hinduism.

The people interviewed were Indian. They seem to have given their responses from an un-bias point of view. Of these four learning styles, the use of videos only really benefits one style, the Visual/Nonverbal Learning Style, where as text books greatly benefit the remaining three types of learning styles.

Instead of getting to enjoy the beauty of the video, the audience was too busy writing as fast as they could while trying to take notes so they could write a four to seven page paper on whether or not the assignment was an effective tool and to what extent of a role it should play in the overall educational process. However, one problem that seemed to arise is that the video seemed to be on an intermediate level.
