Trapped Characters streecar named desire and catcher rye

There comes a time in someone’s life where they feel trapped and alone. They feel like the walls in their lives are closing in on them and there is no escape. The result in this entrapment leads them to a breakdown of their mentality and the seek for help. Holden the main character in The Catcher in the Rye is filled with so much anger at society which leads him to a mental breakdown. On the other hand, Blanche the main character in A Streetcar Named Desire suffers from a breakdown due to her deceit and lies to others. Both of the main character feel trapped in their lives and as a result both suffer which sends them to a mental facility. Although the circumstances of their breakdowns differ, they both are trapped and share the same outcome. The characters of Blanche Dubois and Holden Caulfield are both lost in their own fantasy worlds where their personalities, dilemmas and the affect they have on others ultimately decides their fate.

Blanche Dubois is a very interesting character in A Streetcar Named Desire, she mentions she is about 30 years old. In the beginning of the play she arrives in New Orleans, she appears to be the essence of purity by wearing a white dress. The illusion that is portrayed

"The trouble with Dame Blanche was that she couldn't put on her act any more in Laurel! They got wised up after two or three dates with her and then they quit, and she goes on to another, the same old line, same old act, same old hooey! But the town was too small for this to go on forever! And as time went by she became a town character. Stella still will not believe Stanley's stories about her sister. In the literal sense it will unveil her real age through her appearance, and in the metaphorical sense it will reveal her lies and deceit. He finds a hard time associating with older, mature individuals. Although these two characters differ in personalities, the cause of their state of minds starts with their personalities. Holden vocalizes about the fact Phoebe can visit him anytime in the summer, "What I'd do, I'd let old Phoebe come out and visit me in the summertime and on Christmas vacation and Easter vacation" (Sallenger, 205). " (Tennessee 167) This is evidence of her character traits of constantly lying to people because in reality she did cheat them out their money. Holden has a strong relationship with Phoebe, his younger sister. This confrontation leads to an argumentative and slightly violent standoff between the two in-laws. She demands to be seen for what she wishes to be, rather than what she really is. Holden shows a solid liking to his sister and is always wanting her by his side. This is introduced in the beginning scenes when Blanche sneaks a drink before she meets her sister.

Holden Caulfield’s personality is completely opposite to Blanche. about her is that she is delicate like a white moth and cannot bear vulgar language.
