Dead Again, directed by Kenneth Branagh, is a film full of mystery, fascinating puzzles, romance, wit, with plenty of twists and turns. The film starts with headlines screaming “Murder!” Roman Strauss is on death row for the conviction of the murder of his wife, Margaret. Forty-five years later a mute women wakes up with horrifying screams sending Mike Church to find out who she is and why she screams. Her screams brings them to Franklyn, a mysterious hypnotist that now owns an antique shop, who ends up reviling what could be her past life and what could be her future as well. With many twists the two stories are put together to discover what really happened to Margaret. The film contains fate, reincarnation, brilliant film techniques and excellent actors to enhance the mystery and the romance.
Fate and destiny are a major part of this film. Margaret (Emma Thompson) and Roman Strauss (Kenneth Branagh) start off having a great relationship but then once the housekeeper, Inga (Hanna Schygulla), and her son, Frankie, are accused of stealing, things become crazy. Can we change the outcome or do we always follow the same path? Will Grace and Mike’s relationship be different from Margaret and Roman’s relationship or will she die all over again? All these questions will rush through your head while viewing the performance. Having Kenneth and Emma paired together was brilliant. Through a hypnotist Franklyn (Derek Jacobi) discovers her past life as Margaret. We as humans love to think of the possibility of reincarnation and this film creates a story around that aspect making the viewers curious about their questions with fate. Each film being one big puzzle with numerous pieces that just need to be put together. " Roman Strauss tells Gray Baker (Andy Garcia). Mike Church (Branagh) helps Amanda (Thompson) or “Grace” as he calls her, solve the mystery of who she is and why she screams. There is no doubt in my mind Dead Again wont leave you sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what’s to come. Also the use of music was used to enhance the inherit drama, without being too intrusive. Baker, is that this is all far from over.
Dead Again could be compared to the movie, The Usual Suspects, directed by Bryan Singer. Since the two of them were married outside the film the chemistry was already existed which only added to the romance to the film. Both have twists and turns that leave you with a new conclusion every ten minutes.
