Nature vs. Nurture

             The controversy over what determines who we are, whether it is Nature (heredity, our biological make up) or Nurture (our environment). Through the past decades psychologists have developed different theories to explain the characteristics of human-beings; how we feel, think and behave. Usually, these theories were one directional in the nature/nurture question. I do not think there is a middle ground between nature and nuture. I think that nurture over rules most heredity aspects, environment, and their affects on determining ones development and behavior. Infact, the more we understand about development and behavior, the more obvious it becomes that nurture has more influence on someone's personality and behavior.
             "Our genes made us. We animals exist for their preservation and are nothing more than their throwaway survival machines." This is what Richard Darwin stated in his book: The Selfish Gene. Yes, this statement makes a lot of sense and partially convincing, but I have my own life and own experiences. My brother and I were born of the same mother and father. We both shared the equal amount of love and care. We both were A students in high school, but his senior year he was introduced to drugs. He dropped out of school, got in a couple of conflicts with the law. While I graduated high school and is in college.
             If that saying by Richard Darwin is true, why is my brother in jail and I am in a psychology class right now. "Our genes made us", my brother and I are in two different worlds, and neither of us can fit into each other shoes. Before we take a stand to Darwin's statement, let us familiarize ourselves with what is meant when the term nature is used. Nature represents what we are born with and cannot control.
