After three decades of use, the UNIX computer operating system from Bell Labs is still regarded as one of the most powerful, versatile, and flexible operating systems in the computer world. Its popularity is due to many factors, including its ability to run a wide variety of machines, from micros to supercomputers, and its portability. All of which led to its adoption by many manufacturers, even though the Unix operating system can be challenging to master and hard to use Unix to its highest capabilities. There are many sources in text and on the Internet to help someone learn the many uses of Unix; in which I have chosen five and will cite the positive and negative uses of the source, and how the source helps in the Unix environment.
The first source I encountered is the book “Unix in a Nutshell,” by Arnold Robbins, and Daniel Gilly. This is one of the better sources on Unix because it is the wide-ranging reference for Unix operating system. Its dictionary index of the commands covers everything about Unix, but the index is not for beginners because you have to know what you are looking for to find it. The parts I enjoyed about this book are the extensive index with basically every command known in Unix. I also liked the sec

The Unix help page has extensive help on all the flavors of Unix, including the free versions of Linux. A positive about this book it that its index is better written that “Unix in a Nutshell” because it is aimed more at the novice users. This book will help a user in Unix because it is a compilation of tips and tricks that can help users exploit the power of Unix. I would still recommend this book to beginners because eventually, it will become useful for the Unix user. Also, the book does not provide a tutorial or a background of Unix. A negative about the book is that is concentrates more on the command line, shells, processes, and management of files, than is concentrates on networking and setting up a server. Downfalls of the site include, broken links, and the lack of up to date news and resources, that need to accompany a technological type website. Each source had its own unique positive sections that could help a user further their skills as a Unix operator. A major advantage to this site is that it covers helping the beginning user, the normal user, and the system administrator, which is a plus because anyone can benefit from the site. A negative to this book is that is it designed for a system administrator and was not written for a beginner. This site would help a user in the Unix environment because it has many FAQ’s, text information pages, and links that can help someone find what they are looking for. “UNIX System Administration Handbook,” is a great book for Unix administrators because it is well written and it is obvious the authors have a lot of experience, due to the many real-world examples shown to the reader.
The final source is a web site titled “UnixTools. Another positive to this site is that it covers the networking capabilities of Unix, and security related topics. This site has information Unix System Administration, including system security, Unix software products, and Unix hardware vendors.
