WUTHERING HEIGHTS
I would be referring to three episodes in the significance of the presentation of Nelly as a narrator in the novel. First episode ranges within chapter4, Volume1, Pg34-Pg40 where Nelly begins her narration by giving an overview of the conflict in Wuthering Heights. Second episode ranges from chapter9, Volume1, Pg78-chapter10, pg96 during Heathcliff's absence in the land of Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights. And the third episode is Volume2, Chapter 2, pg166-chapter3, pg172 after Catherine's death. By these three episodes, we see Nelly as the relatively better narrator who also has her own Christian beliefs and opinions. She is also seen as the nurturing and motherly figure which transcends through both the generations of Catherine Earnshaw,Heathcliff and Catherine, Hareton, which will be significant to the novel's theme of enclose-ness and revenge and transcending love or inseparability.Throughout the Novel, aside from other narrators like Zillah and Isabelle within Nelly's narration, Nelly's narration alone consists of only what happens within Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights .Issues that happen beyond these boundaries remain a mystery to us. A valid example would be the departure and sudden return of Heathc
However, it is not to say her role as a narrator is entirely accurate because it involves her own opinions colored by Christian beliefs, which may flaw her narration and there are evidence of slight biasness in her narration. So, she has a clearer view of narrating the development of Catherine and Heathcliff's relationship. As we would see, her colored opinions may not be accurate all the time. But Catherine claims otherwise that" If I were in Heaven I would be extremely miserable(Pg81)" because "the angels were so angry they flung me down on the top of Wuthering Heights; where I woke up sobbing for joy(Pg81)" her peace truly lies in Wuthering Heights and in Heathcliff. This proves that Nelly's view is colored by Christian beliefs, which can be flawed. In the third episode, she viewed Catherine's Death as a"blessed release"" her spirit is to be home with the Lord(Pg167)"but she fails to consider that it is not so to Catherine. An example would be when she encouraged Heathcliff to behave and dress-up to be with Catherine in chapter7 (vol. Her departure from Wuthering Height and Hareton to Thrushcross Grange seems to allow the degration of Hareton from young. The development of revenge in Heathcliff from his younger age and the effect these events of the first generation have onto the second generation. Another example of aiding the "reunification" of Heathcliff and Catherine would be in Episode3 where Nelly was" moved by his perseverance (and) give him a chance of bestowing on the fading image of his idol one final adieu(pg170)"and allowed him into the Linton household. "I told the master he got rid of all decent people only to ruin a little faster (Pg89)" by depriving him of a caring motherly figure and educator from young. Nelly's Christian opinion is significant in showing us that throughout the events of the novel, her own opinions should be questioned. Nelly also acts a close and motherly role to young Catherine Linton, after the death of her mother at the former's birth" I nursed her, poor thing!" and her separation from Cathy "we might be together again" parallels the one with Hareton, which she also wishes to reunite with .
