“You’ll never think of anything,” was the thought that kept running through my head. How could this be when I have always been such a good writer? Well, it happened, so call the doctor because this was the worst case of writer’s block in the history of the world.
Maybe you need a little background information. I was taking Theatre Appreciation at Darton College in Albany, Ga. I figured that it would be an easy ‘A’ because I had always been active in the theatre there, and the guy teaching the class was the director first, but he was also my bud. So anyway, at the beginning of the semester he gave us each a partner in the class and a chapter out of the book to do this big huge oral report on. He gave my partner and me playwriting. I took this assignment as a pretty big challenge because our director had originally been a playwright and I really felt like we needed to go the extra mile to impress him because, well, that’s how he made a name for himself for so many years. He was contracted at a theatre in Rhode Island to be their in house playwright as well as writing for a children’s TV show called ALLAMAZE. You see why I took this assignment so seriously? But I am a little thick headed and I still wanted to go in there with Broadway caliber work. So I wrote, I wrote, and I wrote, and I wrote. It was something to give to the class. You have to feel it, let it guide you. I will concede that I did gain valuable experience from trying to write a play. They all had different traits from my personality and anyone who remotely knew (which was half the class and the teacher) would be thinking…. Writing isn’t something you can force. Jack was still very impressed with the angle I had taken my project from. But I knew that he knew I didn’t write the one that was presented. So I met up with jack later that afternoon and totally spilled the beans. I sat at my computer and, well I just sat there.
