St. Patrick
Who was St. Patrick? He was the man pictured with the clover, but who was he? What was his story? Why did he go to Ireland, and what was the significance of that? What did he actually do there? Patrick is said to be a type of role model and is a Christian saint, but why was he important?Patrick was born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387 A.D. He lived there until he was about sixteen, and then he was captured by pirates. He was captured by Irish marauders and sold into slavery with thousands of people. He was bought by a chieftain named Milchu in Dalriada, a territory in the current county of Antrim in Ireland. At this time, Patrick knew of God's presence, but he didn't accept Him in his life to the full extent. He believed in God, but he wasn't really faithful to Him. He turned away from God, didn't keep His commandments, and did not obey the priests. He was a self-described sinner. He states that he was unlearned, unfaithful, and despised by many. He had turned away from God, and did not keep His commandments. Yet, even though he was tempted, and led morally astray. He said in his autobiography that "God watched over me before I knew him, and before I was able to distinguish between good and evil, and
Patrick removed the cloud, and foiled their plan. Gradually a love of God and a respect for Him filled Patrick. Patrick arrived in a land of paganism and impurity. The traditions and customs of Druidism were cruel and sinful. The leaves represent God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Divine Holy Spirit. The fire of good that Patrick started spread into all corners of the Emerald Isle. They worshipped the sun, moon, mountains, rivers, and wells. " The voice directed him to a ship two hundred miles away. The Druids tried various incantations and implored their evil and magic to destroy him, but Patrick had prayer and faith. After Patrick spread the Gospel to the people of Ireland, his teachings and knowledge were diffused into Europe. He truly earned his way into history, and it is only right that we honor him on St. For two months Patrick was imprisoned by the crew, and after sixty days he was again freed by the Lord. Patrick knelt in prayer, and at once the man was killed against the rocks. " He was greatly troubled by this vision, and he wondered how the Lord could be telling him to go back to Ireland. We can thank Patrick for the growth of the church throughout Ireland and Europe.
