Daivd Hume's An enquiry of human understanding

Hume classifies human reason into two categories: relations of ideas and matters of fact. According to Hume relations of ideas can be demonstratively proven or certain. He gives the example of such as in math it can be proven that the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the squares of the two sides. Matters of fact are not ascertained in the same manner. Matters of facts are ideas which are caused by impressions or our perceptions. Matters of fact cannot be proven with evidence because every contradiction is possible. Hume uses an

. . .

Hume states that “ The contrary of every matter of fact is still possible ; because it can never imply a contradiction, and is conceived by the mind with the same facility as distinctness as if ever so conformable to reality. It is our experience that is underlying this assumption that a cause produces an effect. example of the sun rising tomorrow to point this out.

Hume believed that all reasoning concerning matters of facts are based upon the relation of cause and effect. “The hearing of an articulate voice and rational discourse in the dark assures us the presence of some person: Why? Because these are the effects of the human make and fabric , and closely connected with it. If we had no experience we would no way to tell what would come after the cause, anything could be possible. The hearing of the voice is the cause and the effect is that we believe it is human through the experience of hearing the human voice. Just because the sun has risen before doesn’t mean it will again .

Hume finds this problematic because he says that even though the cause was proceeded by an effect there is no evidence that the cause was responsible for the effect. But according to Hume there is no actual evidence to support this idea. He uses an example to explain this . We can only make guesses on what will happen in the future, based on our experiences of the past. Out of custom , we predict that the sun will rise everyday like it has in the past.
