How I Learned To Drive
Throughout Paula Vogel's play How I Learned to Drive, the one main theme that emerges is that of pedophilia. Reading through this play, while thinking as the director, was to say the least difficult. Also while reading the play, it was disturbing personally to think about, because the issue of pedophilia has affected a close friend. As a director there are many aspects to consider before performing and casting this play. How I Learned to Drive is a powerful and thought provoking play that takes an incredible director and a talented cast to make this While considering this play through a directors eyes, and also thinking through personal experience, makes this play discomforting and emotional to direct. For myself, growing up in a small town, pedophilia and child molestation were rarely heard of. Every person in the town knew every other person by name. We all learned about pedophiles, child molestation and rape in school early on in life. However, no one every thinks that they would ever have to deal with it. In grade seven, while sitting in math class, the principal of our Junior High School called my best friend down to the office for a meeting.
As the director I intend to place more sympathy towards Li'l Bit, and not as much, or none at all to Uncle Peck. The actors could be shadowed, and a body double whom is an adult could play Li'l Bit. However, transforming this play into a movie would take it to another level. Also Demi Moore and Emma Watson have the same features, so it is likely that they could be the same person. "Driving" is one of the main themes in this play. Or, similar to the movie Kill Bill, the sexual scenes could be turned into cartoon. The cartoon scene in the movie Kill Bill was amazing, and it would be just as amazing and effective in this movie. 53) Child pornography and pedophilia is an extremely emotional issue, and if performed correctly, should leave the audience or viewer feeling disturbed and haunted. Performing this on a stage is not giving the play and these scenes the justice that they deserve. In the play Paula Vogel does not seem to take a stern enough stance against pedophiles. The cinematography in this movie would be incredible because of the use of so many different mediums. It is an unbelievably emotional and touchy subject that needs to be addressed in a tactful and respectful manner. An attractive female adult performing this part does not give justice to this disgusting act. Later on, I found out that she was taken away from her home, and out of our town to live with a foster family.
