Then, their creativity emerged again, and they began building and selling bikes that they made themselves. However, they did not only build the bikes themselves, but made the machines to build them with. Bicycle season is not very long in Ohio, so they had a lot of extra during the winter for new ideas. As these new ideas began to fill their minds, they came up with a new plan; flight.
             Orville and Wilbur had read newspaper stories about men trying to fly. One man in Germany was having success with hang gliders. However, in the midst of a flight, he lost his balance and he died on impact. But, other people interested in flight were still experimenting with hang gliders. So, as Wilbur and Orville started to experiment with flying they began there. They also wanted to know about the mistakes that others had made so that they did not repeat them. Though there was not much on the subject, the brothers sought out several books on flight.
             The only place where Wilbur and Orville could find books about flying was when they wrote to the Smithsonian Institute. After a few months of study the brothers were intrigued by a new scientific field, called aeronautics.
