For example, if a patient suffers from a common cold and is experiencing a slight throat irritation, the wise decision would be to decline antibiotic use and try other forms of cold medications like Tylenol or Motrin. Also, public health would be at risk, since antibiotics are used to prevent diseases in animals that would then be transmitted to humans. For example, some strains of Salmonella bacteria, which can easily be transmitted to humans through meat, are antibiotic resistant because they were continually exposed to antibiotics, thus the bacteria evolved resistance.
