Children are affected by their parents.Drugs traumatize children. The drug known as, Crank or meth has become an epidemic in the Western United States. Drugs are not victimless crimes. Drugs affect the addicts' grandparents, parents, children, siblings, law enforcement officers, court workers, and average citizens like you and me.Many experts describe meth addicts as aggressive, belligerent, mean, anxious, fearful and paranoid. These extreme feelings persist for weeks, exacerbated by fatigue. Because of the effects of meth many users do not eat or sleep for weeks. These are troubled people, not caring for themselves or those around them. Most of the women have been sexually molested and are "shattered at a level we know very little about," says Lindy Haunschild, coordinator of the Parent-Child Assistance Program in Spokane. She goes on to say "Children born to these mothers also are likely to be sexually abused. They don't have stable, loving, nurturing parents to keep them safe?" Based on cases studies, estimates show that nine out of 10 meth-addicted parents lost permanent custody. Babies cannot change their own soiled diaper or tell others that they have not eaten for hours. Children are unable to see the causes of the filth, hunger, lack of electricity, or the frequent moves. Children don't understand why Mommy smells strange. The long-term health effects to those exposed peripherally are still unknown. Terri Jones a CPS social worker for 15 years in Spokane, talks about a meth addicts' "great wall of denial" no matter how bad the conditions, parents insist the kids are OK. Unfortunately, social workers say it's not uncommon to find 8-year-olds who've never been to school. During a raid on one meth house, it was found that the home's front room was soaked with toxic chemical residue 25 times the safe limit. If a child comes in contact with any of these it causes caustic chemical burns. " It is clear because of the dangers these children are exposed to we may have an entire generation of individuals with severe disabilities. " The process used to make the drug is dangerous, toxic and leaves residue that must be removed by a Hazardous Materials Team. CPS worker Nicole La Belle recalls taking three siblings - 11, 2 and 1 - from a suspected meth lab in Spokane last year.
