The Tragical History of Doctor FaustusDoctor Faustus is a tragic play written by Christopher Marlowe. The play focuses on the character Doctor Faustus and his decision to sell his soul to the Lucifer. He believes that this will get him the ultimate power and knowledge that he seeks. In this play, pride is the downfall for Faustus. Faustus refuses to repent his sins and is damned to hell for his actions. Within the story, there is an ongoing relationship between Faustus and a devil named Mephastophilis. This relationship changes throughout the story. Mephastophilis first appears in Act 1 scene 3.In this scene, Faustus uses black magic to call up the dark forces. He expects to see Lucifer before him, but instead he gets a servant, Mephastophilis. This servant is sent to make a deal with Faustus to get his soul. At this point, Faustus is not truly convinced that he will suffer for this deal with the devil. He is doing everything he possibly can to get the soul of Faustus. This is clearly represented in Act V scene I. Faustus didn't recognize the game being played because of his pride. He apparently does not want Faustus to share the same fate. An old man talks him out of suicide, much to the devil's dismay, and tells him to repent. In Act II scene 1, the relationship changes between Faustus and Mephastophilis. He sealed his fate in the end by trusting Mephastophilis and turning his back on God. Mephastophilis knows what is in store for Faustus if he goes through with the deal. He knows the weaknesses of Faustus (pride and fear) and he uses them against him. Faustus then agrees to give up his soul if he can have one last request. He pushes Faustus to the point of no return. Mephastophilis gets hot coals to warm the blood. In this scene, Faustus has decided to sell his soul for the power. Faustus is convinced at this point and agrees to write the blood written deed.
