The Causal Factors of Divorce in America
It is hypothesized that one causal factor of divorce among heterosexual American couples is financial problems. It is said that the number one cause of divorce is financial problems. No mater how rich or poor a person is, one constant subject of marital disagreements leading to divorce is money. In reality, of course, it is not the lack of money that causes divorce. The vast majority of couples who split cite money as the main or primary factor. A recent study found that 57 percent of divorced couples said financial disputes were a primary cause of marital discord (Larson, Newell, Topham, Nichols, 2002). Ten percent said it was the main cause of divorce. However, the issue of money doesn't always have to lead to the demise of a relationship. For married couples the financial aspect of the relationship actually has some benefits(Johnson, Wright, Ketring, 2002). There is a sense of stability and security when two people can work together and manage money cooperatively (Johnson, Wright, Ketring, 2002). Married couples also enjoy more tax benefits than singles because they are more likely to own a home than to rent. However, money can cause some serious problems in a relationship. While different views about money can lead to s
Six million American women are beaten each year by their husbands. The woman hates the violence but loves the compassion (Smith, Rosen, McCollum, 2002). Since the occurrence of spousal abuse is pervasive, community leaders and government officials do their best to prevent it. Battered women sometimes stay for their children, so their abusive partner will not get custody(Seccombre, 2002). Some survivors reason that they will sacrifice themselves so their children can have a father, good schools, a safe neighborhood or have financial security(Rankin & Quane, 2002). In conclusion, money problems simply bring out the worst in people, that may otherwise be hidden. Men who believe they "own" their female partners view her departure as an ultimate betrayal which justifies retaliation (Haddock, 2002). Spousal rape still not considered domestic violence in some states . When an extramarital affair is discovered, often the couple will undergo a crisis. It is hypothesized that a third causal factor of divorce among heterosexual America couples is spousal abuse. Women generally are the money managers in the relationship responsible for budgeting, balancing the checkbook, etc. It is hypothesized that a second causal factor of divorce among heterosexual American couples is extra marital activities. Although a large percentage of the participants had an extra marital activities experience, there was not widespread acceptance of this behavior by men or women. There is no more surefire way to destroy a marriage than to sleep with somebody other than your spouse (Fowers, Veingrad, Dominicis, 2002). It is not just the act of adultery that is most damaging to a marriage.
