WAP

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an application environment and a set of communication protocols that allow the development of applications and services that enable mobile phones and other mobile devices, such as pagers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to, manufacturer-, vendor-, and technology -independent access to the Internet or an Intranet. This synergy between the world's two fastest growing technologies - mobile technology and the Internet - is creating and opportunity that no organization can afford to ignore. This opportunity is called the Mobile Internet.Wireless data networks present a more constrained communication environment compared to wired networks. Because of fundamental limitations of power, available spectrum and mobility, wireless data networks tend to have: Furthermore, as bandwidth increases, the handset's power consumption also increases which further taxes the already limited battery life of a mobile device. Therefore, even as wireless networks improve their ability to deliver higher bandwidth, the power availability at the handset will still limit the effective throughput of data to and from

The web browser is a networked application, i. ) Because of these limitations, the user interface of a wireless handset is fundamentally different than that of a desktop computer. The WAP protocols are designed to compensate for or tolerate this varying level of service. * Authentication - WTLS contains facilities to establish the authenticity of the terminal and application server. The discussion is for illustrative purposes only. The URL may refer to a static file or a servlet or other script application. BearersThe WAP protocols are designed to operate over a variety of different bearer services, including short message, circuit-switched data, and packet data. Applications are able to selectively enable or disable WTLS features depending on their security requirements and the characteristics of the underlying network (e. * The Browser (client machine) makes an HTTP request as identified by a URL of the Web Server. The Web Server can be either on the Internet or an Intranet. The connectionless service is most suitable, when applications do not need reliable delivery of data and do not care about confirmation. The Wireless Session Protocol (WSP)The Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) provides a means for organized exchange of content between co-operating client/server applications. * Privacy - WTLS contains facilities to ensures that data transmitted between the terminal and an application server is private and cannot be understood by any intermediate parties that may have intercepted the data stream. As part of the connection, the client submits the IP Address of the WAP Gateway and the WWW-URL of the Web Server.
