Mill vs. Williams
What is the ultimate happiness for us, human beings? Is it to become rich? Is it to have a high social status? Or is it to be with the one you love? Not surprisingly, there are infinite answers to this question. To answer this question, many philosophers thought and created numerous numbers of ethical theories. During the nineteenth century, a great philosopher named John Stuart Mill introduced one of the most popular ethical theories: Utilitarianism. Utilitarianism, in other words The Greatest Happiness Principle, is a belief where any actions that invites happiness is right; wrong if it invites the opposite of happiness. According to Mill, Happiness is defined as, 1 "Intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, and the privation of pleasure." In different words, he states that happiness is another word for pleasure, where no sort of pain takes place. Utilitarianism focuses on overall happiness rather than the happiness of an individual. Mill classifies pleasure into two categories: high pleasure and low pleasure.High pleasure is happiness that only humans can enjoy; whereas low pleasure is happiness that not only humans, but animals too, can enjoy. Due to his health condition, George has a restricted number of jobs that he can do satisfactorily. Not necessarily everything can be considered as "black or white. The answer may be totally opposite if the person that was surveyed disliked kitties. " They tend to go for the closer pleasure even if they know that waiting longer would bring higher pleasure. Although Utilitarianism may bring happiness to more people, its strict rules ignores the value of integrity, the notions of personal responsibility and at times, it contradicts itself in a certain situation; dilemma for example. At times, utilitarianism can contradict itself and cause confusion. Either way, Jim is controlling the fate of the Indians. In conclusion, depending on the situation more people may be happy. 4"Jim will be after they have taken. " As I said, utilitarianism focuses on the overall happiness. The question here is what is the right thing for George to do? If he does participate, he maybe helping to create a dangerous weapon, but according to Utilitarianism, he is NOT responsible for WHAT happens because of his actions. Further more, if he doesn't take the job, another person may take it. " Time is something that is not guaranteed. This is because, according to utilitarianism the right thing to do is to give as much as he or she can give until he or she cannot support him/her self.
