The Lost Battle
During all his books Ernest Hemingway showed protagonist that always were warriors, in spite that the majority of them were soldiers their fight was not in the war field, but their own life . The intention of these characters was to show, according Ernest Hemingway, what life meant to him.As I mentioned before despite of the fact that Hemnigway's protagonists were in a war, his actual field of battle was themselves and with the help of the war their inner existence conflicts became stronger. For example, Nick Adams("The Battle"), who went to First World War, after he got hurt from a battle he declared in peace with the enemy. Despite of the fact that the War had not finish yet, the fight to get over of this traumatic experience had just begun. The facts that caussed him to take the decission of declaring in peace with his enemy were: a traumatic childhood, that it is his symbolic wound and the physical damage during the warIn "Big Two Hearted River" Nick Adams returned from the war and fought against his war memories in order not to become insane. Well, we see here that the battle for his existence continued after the War, and with the recollection of his childhood the battle became stronger than ever. After ha he
For instance, Frederic Henry recovered from his knee hurt but at the end he died with nothing. And other important detail is that across his characters Ernest Hemingway tried to satisfy his frustrations; in "Soldier's Home" Krebs join to the army in Kansas City, Hemingway tried to join the army but he was rejected due to his bad eye. According to Phillip Joyce in Ernest Hemingway the protagonists can have many wounds, they can recover from other but another there are more difficult to get over from; however, at the end the protagonists will lose his fight with the existence. This special moment of his life is represented in the short story "Soldier's Home" where Krebs after the war took a routine of: inventing sotires, a workless life and frustrated for his life. D in Northamerican literature, to Hemingway the lost battle is the existence, but his protagonists had to face their lost battle with dignity and honor. The resembling of his life with his characters is conspicuous. Ernest Hemingway, as Nick Adams, had a traumatic childhood; about that Hemingway told that it was needed in order to be a good writer. When he returned to his home, he came back as a war hero; but when he was asked to tell about his experiences of war, he exaggerated the relates in order to please his listeners. All his books attempted to present the inner conflict in the mankind about his existence;moreover, the life is a war camp where you can never stop to fight and something that is sure: is that you will lost the battle with your existence, but you have to fight against it with honor and dignity. As a conclussion, we can say that Hemingway through his books he attempted to express his point of view about life; not in a direct way expressing opinion, but through his characters that presented his most traumatic and significant experiences of life. Hemingway went to the First World War, not as a soldier but an ambulance driver; his knee got hurt the same as his character from "A Farewell to Arms", Frederic Henry, who besides of being hurt in the knee also fell in love with a nuse in Milan while he was recovering of his wound. In this case we can see that despite of the fact that Robert Jordan had a feeling of his death, he faced with honor and goaled the objective of destroying the bridge, before he died. But not only in the protagonists happened these things: Hemingway recovered from many wounds; some of them were almost going him to die, for example: when he got the airplane accident that everybody USA thought that we was dead; he recovered from others easily, like the wound in the knee after 12 operations; but the wound that he could not recover easily was from his traumatic childhood. According to Phillip Joyce, Ph.
