He then states that he muttered that the raven will leave him, just like all of his other hopes have left him in the past. Poe, the writer of the poem, also uses internal rhymes such as his usage of the words “uttered”, “fluttered”, and “muttered” in the eighth stanza. Poe uses the word “muttered”, to express how the man feels gloomy and heartbroken from the rejection of the neglecting raven. lines are “outpour”, “before”, “before”, and “nevermore”. The word “outpour” expresses the narrator’s outrage and disappointment in the raven for not speaking more than just the one negative word, “nevermore” which is due to the fact that the narrator feels he should be somehow uplifted from the raven but is actually not being helped at all. Thus, the rhyme scheme used in this poem reveals the melancholy mood of the each stanza by using words that portray the aspects of both the man and the raven. Moreover, he is already miserable from the tragedy of what happened “before”, the death of his loved one, Lenore. These words emphasize the emotions of both the narrator and the raven. When the narrator states that the raven did not utter one word or flutter his feathers, he is revealing to the reader that the raven is being highly apathetic towards him despite his tragic loss of Lenore.
