Feminism Today

             Feminism is defined in the dictionary as 'the equality between men and women, socially, politically and economically' (dictionary.com). For the majority of history in North America, the female gender has been treated unequally to males; although their 'fight' towards equality has become quite beneficial to them, women today are still often treated as inferior when compared to their sexual counterparts. Since the turn of the nineteenth century, women have earned themselves many rights, including their right to vote, and to attend many popular universities; since then, the battle for female rights continues. The birth of feminism brought many changes to the lives of women, bringing them many possibilities that they never even imagined having. Females and feminists alike have come a long way in their efforts. In spite of this, a great deal of sexism can still be witnessed in the media, and in sports. Daytime television and world-famous golf tournaments are both excellent examples.
             It is difficult to overlook some common occurrences of sexism that are broadcasted on television; during the daytime, in particular. Soap operas and female-hosted talk shows run during the day, while the targeted female is expected to be at home watching them. And as these so-called "home-makers" watch, displayed are many commercials for things such as laundry detergent, floor cleaning solutions, and several other products primarily based on home care. From the first television set, right up to present day, a majority of the television networks are like this; they are not intended for men in any direct way. This ideology has always been in the minds of most North Americans, and should not be expected to change anytime soon.
