Richard Duke of Gloucester was an extremely egocentric person. He had a complete disregard for the emotions of all the people’s lives that he has affected in his mission to get the crown. On his path to get the crown he left a huge trail of chaos behind him, the trail had affected many peoples lives, those close to him and those he had never met. He was so egocentric that he killed anyone standing in his way of the crown or people that he no longer needed, this included family, friends and his cronies who helped him get the crown.
Richard is an extremely egocentric character in Shakespeare’s play. He only cares about one person, himself. He will do anything to get what he wants, even if it means hurting the people who are closest to him. The following quotes show the depths that Richard will go to to get what he wants.
Richard: I am determined to prove a villain,
And hate the idle pleasures of these days.
Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous,

Richard: Well, but what’s the o’clock?
Buckingham: Upon the stroke of ten. He has killed, organised for people to be killed and started wars all for his personal gain. He does not care at all for all the chaos he has caused, but in the end it comes backs and gets him. He didn’t care about Elizabeth’s feelings that she would have after loosing her sons. Buckingham helped Richard a great deal so that Richard could claim the crown but once Richard had the crown, Buckingham was discarded and not compensated for what he had done.
Richard had a complete disregard for all of the people around him. This was all part of his plan so that he could get the crown. He does not think or care about how his actions can affect other people emotionally.
I must be married to my brother’s daughter,
Or else my kingdom stands on brittle glass-
Murder her brothers and then marry her!
Richard could see his reign weakening so he decided he needed to marry his niece to keep his power.
Now, for I know the Breton Richmond aims
At young Elizabeth, my brother’s daughter,
And, by that knot, looks proudly on the crown,
To her go I, a jolly thriving wooer. Richard did not care at all that he had broken the promise he had made to Buckingham that would compensate him for all of the things that he had done.
Richard left a trail of chaos behind him as he worked his way to being the next king.
