Capital Punishment

             Capital punishment is a policy characterized by a single horrifying act: the killing of a human being. Alleviating factors aside, most would agree that the death penalty itself is an act of murder-something NOT to be taken lightly. But capital punishment is being taken lightly. Now the practice is casually being accepted all across the country.
             A resurrection of the public debate about capital punishment would hopefully result in the elimination of this hypocritical procedure. Capital punishment is murder. And under both the laws of God and our country, a murder is a crime. If we decide to overlook murder, we must always remember why. The price of forgetting is our humanity. Using our indignation as an excuse to rid the world of the vile creatures who have committed murder, we allow ourselves to behave exactly as they have.
             Biblical text also argues the immorality of capital punishment For those of us who were raised in the Christian morally tradition that is significantly based on the Ten Commandments you will recall that Exodus 20:13 states the clear Biblical injunction, "Thou shalt not kill". The Bible teaches that every human being is made in the image of God. May I ask what you take that to means? My interpretation is that when we kill a fellow human being, we both diminish ourselves and insult God. Never mind the hostility towards violent criminals - why are we so willing to give up our decency for their sake? More importantly, one might ask, how have we grown so comfortable with performing such a horrible act?
             Also, there is a story in the New Testament about the woman who committed adultery and faced stoning. Jesus saved the woman's life when he said, "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone" (John 8:7). I interpret this verse to have two significant points. Firstly, everyone makes mistakes, who are we to judge? And secondly, it seems very clear to me that this story illustrate
