Cars and Clothing

While the depression was devastating to most American auto campanies, Chrysler Corporation seemed to be living through it better than most. Despite the market crash of '29, Plymouth sales were booming by the early '30s. This was partly because Chrysler was technologically ahead of the competition and starting in 1930 all Chrysler, Dodge and DeSoto dealerships were given Plymouth franchises. This made a Plymouth agency almost as easy to find as a Ford store. In 1932 all Chrysler products had all steel bodies and hydraulic brakes, features that were not yet available in Ford or Chevrolet. The Plymouth could also be ordered with a "free wheeling" feature. When engaged this acted as a gas saving tool that didn't allow you to slow down without stomping on the brakes. The 1936 Plymouth was basically a restyle of the '35 model. The grille was a bit more rounded and many of the details were "Airflow-ized". Plymou


The styling could be considered conservative and utilitarian as will as sleek. The Plymouth wasn't as loose as the Chevrolet and it didn't lean like the Ford. Hour-glass figures and longer hairstyles were back by demand from glamorous starlets. Now sought to blend in, smartly dressed gangsters could usually play off as fashionable executives. A good piece of transportation for civil servants, traveling salesman, and cautious motorist. Bias cut dress rediscovered by Vionnet were clinging to bust and hips with mid-calf and floor length gowns. The all steel body was strong and solid it is easy to see why they were so popular with sales man and government agencies (especially the F. The rear seating area is both tall and wide, while it's a bit cozy in the front seat were the body narrows. The large doors on the two door sedan offer easy entry to both the front and back seats. The Chrysler product dashboards from this era are all filled with little styling details. The handing was pretty good by contemporary standards. By looking and studying the 1936 Plymouth we are able to capture a piece of those times- the moods- the clothing- the attitudes. The '36 had these little plastic dash knobs that imitated silver rimmed polish rocks.
