Pietro Lorenzetti

The first work that I visited was Pietro Lorenzetti's "panels from an altarpiece showing the Enthroned Virgin and Child, with kneeling donor and angels." The piece immediately caught my eye because of its resemblance to two other works from the Pre-Renaissance, Cimabue's "Madonna Enthroned" and Giotto's "Madonna Enthroned." Pietro Lorenzetti's piece is from Siena during the 1320's. It is about 30 x 60 inches and done in tempera and tooled gold on a wooden panel. Through a dark outer room, the piece is visible through a doorway with a stone archway. The architecture of the room and surrounding rooms emphasizes the Gothic influence of the period and brings and pieces together nicely in that historical setting. In the room there are also other altarpieces from the same pre-Renaissance period. The background of the piece was done primarily in the tooled gold. There is molding in the shape of a triple bubble above the heads of Madonna and Child. She is seated on a throne, Child on knee, and you can see by looking at her hand that the proportions are not quite right because it is larger than it should be. Her dress is detailed in gold. The golden halos around the heads are circular despite the direction in which the head is turned.

Personally I believe it to be Venus because it resembles very much the "Birth of Venus" by Botticelli from the Early Renaissance. Also included in Lorenzetti's painting is a depiction of the donor, who was thought to have been a monk or friar because of his robe and tensured haircut. In this particular mythological piece, there is much debate over what is what is being depicted. Poussin studied the Italian Renaissance and was undoubtedly affected by the works of that period, as were other Baroque artists. This is also demonstrated in Giotto's "Last Judgement" where Scrovegni is shown presenting the chapel. Lorenzetti also used these techniques. The canopies give the piece a sense of movement, as though the wind is blowing them into shore. There is a sense of movement in the water with the reflection and in the trees. The use of this gold gave the pieces in this period a rich look and were reserved for holy figures as a representation of the spiritual realm. Located in a small room, the work has been placed in a gold frame above a wooden table. In Baroque art, color and light played important roles, combining for a rich appearance to the texture. The brush strokes for these halos are done circularly and contrast the brush strokes on the rest of the panel. Monet was particularly focused on time and light in his paintings. Theresa" by Bernini could also be associated with Poussin's work through the richness in colors and sense of action.
