The Cold War

The Cold War was an extremely long war that last from 1945 until 1990. It did not clearly start until 1945, but strained relations remained between the United States and the Soviet Union since 1917. The ending of WWII and the struggle between Communism and Capitalism, led to this unique war. This unparalleled war was between the Capitalist countries, including the United States, or the Eastern bloc and the Communist countries, including the Soviet Union, also referred to as the Western bloc. It was a unique war because it was not exactly declared war of battles, advances, and retreats. It was a war of ideas between the Free World and Communism (Lucas, P 1). Suspicion, mutual distrust, and misunderstandings between the United States, the Soviet Union, and their allies characterized the war. These conditions almost led to a Third World war at certain times. The United States and the Soviet Union both accused each other their ways because the United States wanted a free world with independence and democratic parties while the Soviet Union tried to control most of Eastern Europe, which was considered crucial to the country's interest. The United States was angered with the Soviet Union for wanting to expand Communism across th

One happened in 1968 in Czechoslovakia when the Soviet Union went to bring down the Czech's reformist government. He chose this name to give a positive connotation to arms reduction. The Eastern bloc was led by the Soviet Union, which included Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Albania, and China, who joined after its government was taken over by communism in 1959. Basically, the Cold War ended because the Soviet Union was longer a superpower, and the complex world became dominated by the United States. Then the Iran-Contra scandal came out, and Reagan was losing face. The war was then extended out of Europe and into Asia when North Korea invaded South Korea, and before it when China became the People's Republic of China in 1949. Also in 1949, the United States created NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union almost gained great lasting cooperation, but their major differences caused this not to happen. The countries of Eastern Europe were technologically backward, and did not have the ability to provide for the populace. The neutral nations were Cambodia, Indonesia, and most of the African states (Kramer, P 762). Between 1950 and 1953, the United States fought a one of its two major battles in the Cold War in Korea to defend the South Koreans against the communist North Koreans. The initiative Gorbachev had now rested in the leaders of the many states that broke away from the Soviet Union. The United States and the Soviet Union never indulged against each other militarily, but both were in crises that could have led up to war against each other.
