Skin color on the apples can vary tremendously. It can range from an intense green to a deep, blackish red. Along with color, the shape of the apples is diverse, too. The apples can oblate or oblong, and can range in size from a cherry to a regular sized grapefruit.
             People have cultivated apples for many centuries, mainly for their fruit. Early apple growers crafted the first varieties of apples. They selected the finest strains from wild seedlings and combined them by grafting. Controlled crossing of desired parents creates different types of apples. They can also be created by standard varieties changing over time. Modern apple varieties are thought to have resulted from natural cross-pollination of several species. It is thought this, because the modern varieties are heterozygous-which means that they do not reproduce true to type.
             Apple trees are best suited in areas that during a couple months at least, the average temperature is approximately freezing. The precise requirement varies from apples to apple. The actual trees can withstand temperatures up to –40∘ C (-40∘ F).
