Censorship
Controversy and music have always gone hand-in-hand. Lyrics, dance moves, and clothing, or lack of it are always in the spotlight, which generates much debate. Some call it art, others call it bad taste. As with all creative expressions, the beauty is all in the eyes and ears of the beholder. If we censor the media, disallowing certain music to be played, we will be taking away an art form that exposes what the world is really like, as well as violating one of the most important principles our country was founded on- freedom of speech. The first amendment guarantees rights to free speech. Everyone is protected and has their right to freedom of expression. It is obvious, that by disallowing music artists to rap about certain issues, we are blocking their freedom of speech. How can this be declared a constitutional acti
Musicians can't always be, nor should they be, the only role models we have. Music has always been the voice of rebellion. During the late 60s and 70s, Jim Morrison's dark and suggestive lyrics stirred up communities, and parents were appalled to see Elvis Presley's hip-thrusting. For every person who believes certain lyrics portray a frightening world, there is another person who finds them deep and powerful because that world is all too real. Should we be concerned about our society? Absolutely. Many people who would like to censor creative expression are simply afraid of the issues certain lyrics explore. The answer to controversial music is not censoring it, and preventing our children from developing a sense of judgement, it is to allow it to occur and guide our children to deciding how to interpret and enjoy it tastefully. However, music mirrors the society that creates it. How can people expect that serious social problems like violence, racism or suicide be solved by covering children's ears?. Younger kids should be helped to understand what's real and what's not, what's right and what is unacceptable. Instead of thinking that today's music creates the problems in our society, it should force us to confront them. No direct link between anti-social behavior and exposure to the content of any form of artistic expression has ever been scientifically established. In the late 50s and early 60s, efforts were made to censor R&B music. However, history has always produced controversy over whether to censor or not. Music is a tool, a tool used to show what is really happening and it is our responsibility to recognize that music is a reflection, not a cause.
