The New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are one of the greatest teams in baseball history. They have won the American League Championship 38 times, and have won the World Series 26 times. Few other teams are able to compete with this. It all started on January 9, 1903. Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the losing Baltimore franchise for 18,000 dollars. According to the New York Yankees Official Website they moved the team to Manhattan and the New York franchise was approved as part of the American League. The team played in a poorly constructed, all-wood park at 168th Street and Broadway. Because the site was one of the highest spots in Manhattan, the club was known as the "Highlanders" and their home field "Hilltop Park." In 1999 the Yankees play baseballs last game of the century and complete a four game sweet of the Atlanta Braves to once again capture the World Series. It was the first Subway series since 1956. Without a doubt the New York Yankees have compiled one of the greatest records in all of baseball. Babe Ruth hit the stadiums first home run. In April of 1913 the team was officially renamed the "Yankees", after moving to the Polo Grounds, the home of the New York Giants. Over 74,000 fans packed Yankee Stadium for their first look at the new facility. According to CNN Sports Illustrated in November of 1964 CBS purchased the Yankees for 11. The stadium would be known as "The House That Ruth Built" because it was recognized that Ruth's drawing power made the new stadium possible. In January of 1973 a limited partnership with George Steinbrenner as its general manager purchased the Yankees from CBS. Later that season, the Stadium hosted the first of 33 World Series. The initial distribution of numbers was made according to the player's position in the batting order. Other teams quickly adopted the idea and by 1932 it was standard for all teams. It would be baseball's first triple-decked structure.
