Raisin in the Sun

"If you want a place in the sun, you've got to put up with a few blisters." This quote by Abigail Van Buren relates to the book A Raisin in the Sun. The Younger's experienced many hardships as a black family living in a racist society. These hardships added to other family related problems, such as Walter's losing the money, shaped the plot of the book. The title A Raisin in the Sun, signified the dreams of a black family who wanted to improve their lifestyle in order to live happily without the poverty they were in. The raisin represented the dream the family had and the sun represented the blazing difficulties that engulfed them. This title helped me understand the family's position a little better and it helped me relate to the situation they were in. It also helped me realize how hard it was for the family to accomplish their dream of having a better life. I believe this dream was somewhat of a panacea to them. The theme of the book was supported by literary conflicts such as man vs self, man vs man, and man vs society. The conflict of man vs self was brought about through the character of Walter and his desire to have the money for the liquor store. He was in a constant struggle with himself on what to do and

When the family received the check, everyone was ecstatic. Finally, the conflict of man vs society was brought about by the whole family and the community of Clybourne Park through Mr. This decision made Walter very angry and it created tension between son and mother. Linder came with loving words of brotherhood , but later dropped the bombshell on the family. He offered them money so they wouldn't move into the white community. The family chose to keep their pride and not take the offered money, even though they needed it. This part of the movie helped me clearly see the work Walter did and how degrading it was for him. This confusion and indecision edged him towards the bottle of liquor instead of the liquor business itself. Walter's actions affected the whole family in that they didn't know how to help him open up to them. Nonetheless, both of these works thouroughly showed the hardships and the triumph of the Younger family. The movie omitted some scenes that made the theme stronger. They could only imagine what was possible with the money, but the odds were against them. This is so because Mama gave Walter the remainder of the money and he lost it all in a business deal with a "friend.
