A Thought-Provoking Passage In Hamlet

             The Passage that I feel is not only thought provoking, but also ironic in the play Hamlet, is when Ophelia has found out about her father's murder and is beginning to act mad. This passage is in Act Four, Scene Five beginning on line 171 and continuing through line 207.
             They bore him barefaced on the bier,
             And in his grave rained many a tear.
             Ophelia chanted this among many fragments of songs from English ballads. They were expressing her words of grief for her father's death, and for knowing that the man she loved was responsible for his death. Ophelia also at this time gave Laertes, the King, and the Queen sticks, weeds, and chicken bones to represent flowers.
             There's rosemary, that's for remembrance.
             Pray you, love, remember. And there is pansies,
             that's for thoughts.
             At this point the others felt she was crazy because she truly believed she was giving them flowers. Her brother, and the King and Queen felt very sorry for her actions and wanted to help her, but they knew there was nothing that they could do.
             This passage is particularly important to the Play because the royal family is seeing how conflicts occurring within the kingdom are starting to pull them apart. The death of the King had originally put Hamlet into a lasting state of mourning. This led to Hamlet finding out that King Claudius murdered his father. Then Hamlet starting acting hostile to the people he loved. Polonius wanted to find out what problems were causing Hamlet to be so distraught, so he spied on Hamlet talking to Gertrude. Hamlet killed Polonius for spying on him, and this is when it finally got to Ophelia. Ophelia had already been affected by Hamlet's selfish actions, however this threw her over the edge.
