A Planet For the Taking
"Problems facing us today are immense and many are direct consequence of science and technology," David Suzuki tells the world, but are we really at fault? Yes. The growing field of science and technology has given the world many benefits, but many downfalls as well. Some benefits include cures for diseases, and easier living conditions. On the other hand, downfalls include the endangerment of many species and destructions of ecosystems. The field of science and technology has been abused consiously and unconsiously to destroy species, ecosystems, and waterways and if drastic changes aren't made soon then we will be severly endangering ourselves. The past few generations of humans have unconsiously been destroying thier environments. Populations drive their cars, smoke their cigarettes, dump huge amounts of garbage in landfills instead of recycling most of it, and pollute the land in s . . .
Every year the field of science and technology grows rapidly and at the same time the destruction of many ecosystems are rapidly taking place. Suzuki mentions that the "Great Lakes, which contain 20% of [the] world's fresh water. If we 'harvest' one, we renew it by simply adding one or two more. Take the James Bay Development Project (JBDP) in Quebec for example. There were many enviromental problems caused by the development of several enourmous dams which had a huge impact on Canada's ecosystem. It is underestimatingly unbelievable how people can endanger an ecosystem so easily, but what is more frieghtening is how people can consiously destroy one and not to anything to change it. On the other hand there are many people and corporations who consiously and willingly destroy the environment by abusing their knowledge of science and technology. The world's population will always unconsiously pollute the earth, and all because it lets them live their lives a little bit easier. All of these downfalls were caused because science and technology was taken advantage of by corporations trying to make a profit from hydro-electricity. " People are always trying to find ways to increase their profits and if the danger of the environment comes in the way of their path, they just push it aside. The dams flooded 10,000 sq km in it's first phase, caused organic mercury poisening and poisened 50% of fish and destroyed eel beds and duck migration patterns. The companies didn't take into consideration the destruction of an ecosystem, they just took into consideration what the increase of their benefits. The government is a prime example of abusing our environment with the use of science and technology.
