Americans
Americans can be of any race or ethnicity, but that's not what most Americans think is true. Americans can be very judgmental when it comes to other people's skin. When most people think of an American they think of a white person. How long does all this racism have to go on? Until people just accept people for who they are and not what color they are. To me an American is any one person who lives in the United States, no matter if they were born here or moved here from other countries. Do we still have issues about color and ethnicity? Americans have the choice to identify themselves by the census or a poll, letting the government know about how many different races we have in America and what percent of each group. One way the government knows this is when you fill out an application for a job, for college, car insurance, health insurance, and even some credit cards. There are different category's to choose form, Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, other, and more. Why do we Americans have to say what we are? A Muslim woman says "I began to realize that people didn't even see me when they looked at me, but rather saw an image they had formulated in their minds from glimpses of Hollywood movies showing Arab fanatics hijacking a plane or from a Dateline documentary about female honor killings or some book they read about a Saudi Arabian princess escaping the oppression of a male-dominated society. "Everyone in this country has assimilated," the lady in the audience continued, "except for the Muslims. Yes, it is the freedom we Americans have, to wear or say what we want. If any person from any other country with a different ascent was in America, most of us assume that they are not Americans they must be on vacation here. People might not even know these people that they're judging. Most Americans have gotten so lenient about what we find appropriate to wear out in public. They feel like this broad label would be erasing all their culture and family or religions background. Before they've even learned my name, heard my laughter or witnessed my tears, before they've seen me kick a soccer ball or debate an argument, they have judged me and think they know who I am" Hadia Mubarak (March 4, 2002). On the other hand, some Americans want it to be known that they are not just Americans. I wish more people were more up to date on other people's culture and races. Americans can be any race or ethnicity. We all have the choose to chose what we are in the census but in every day life people around us are the ones that say what we are or look like.
