"The Hanged Man" Versus "Gia."
How similar are the ways in which Francesca Lia Block's prose text, "The Hanged Man" and John Edward's film "Gia" explore the central characters' struggle with depression?Depression is a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal. A sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason. The prose text "The Hanged Man" deals with such an issue in great depth and the physical problems that can follow this psychological disorder. As does the film text, Gia, only the film also presents the emotions and pain felt by the central character with extensive technique."The Hanged Man" is a simple, yet complex prose text. Which attracts, but also disturbs and contradicts itself in countless ways, as it presents the Laurel's struggle with depression. "The Hanged Man" is unsettling as it symbolises the action of paradox in our lives. Laurel the central character in the text, is haunted by a legacy of family secrets, hidden shame, and shattered glass after her father's death. Laurel immerses herself in the toil and turmoil of teenage depression. The subsequent dilemmas that Laurel deals with are that of something wild, caged, and pacing. Slowly Laurel begins to lose herself, battling the troubles of
There is a slight amount of light on her face, and little light on her body, and risque music is played. Gia's face is happy and more lighting is used and there are more instances where the camera zooms in on Gia's sparkling eyes and smiling face. "Gia" had the advantage of being able to show the pain that the central character was feeling. Unlike Laurel who is living a completely different lifestyle, but is feeling pain equally as destructive. When viewing an older Gia, darkness is the central key to the display of her increasingly harsh personality. When Gia is angry the music is lowered and darkness is increased, but after her anger has finished the camera zooms in on her teary eyes and softer music and brighter lighting is used. The ways in which the pain of depression is portrayed are similar in both the prose text "The Hanged Man" and the film text, "Gia". Laurel seems to find the sexual component of her and Jack's relationship more meaningful than anything else. So when she loses contact with Jack she misses the sexual closeness more than anything else does. She sees Jack as being the one to purify her and to take away all the pain she is feeling. The film text "Gia" is based on America's first supermodel Gia Carangi who is corrupted by the promise of fame and wealth and becomes unable to deal with relationship problems and the stress of fame. Shattered dreams seem to be a key component to both the girl's depressions. This is seen by her depressive language and negative images used toward both Claudia and Jack. But shortly after one of these experiences has been described we are once again being reminded of her anorexia and the pain she is feeling.
