Excavation of Tutankhamun
Tutankhamun's tomb was found to be fully intact during Howard Carter's excavation in 1922. Tutankhamun's tomb is a home to many of the mysteries which surround ancient Egyptians burial practices, their beliefs and the afterlife.Paintings found on the walls around Tutankhamun's tomb reveal the importance of mummification. They tell stories of the 'Opening of the Mouth' ceremony, which was considered to be very important because only then could the Ka and Ba spirits be at home in the dead mummy's body. The pictures show all of the gods which the ancient Egyptians believed in. They portrayed the god of the dead, Osiris, as being the one of the most important gods and they revealed that by pleasing him, they would be welcomed into the afterlife. The painting's also reveal the importance of many animals which were worshiped by Ancient Egyptians. The scarab beetle became the symbol of resurrection and this is why it is painted throughout all of the p
Messages to the gods were inscribed on the walls of Tutankhamen's tomb and were written in hieroglyphics, along with spells from the 'Book of the Dead' which believed to keep tomb robbers away. Tutankhamun's tomb revealed a great deal of information related to their beliefs. When the body was unwrapped, more gold and jewellery appeared. The Egyptians used a lot of lapis lazuli especially on Tutankhamun's famous gold mask, because the god of the sun Ra, had lapis lazuli for hair and this preserves a relic of this belief. Underneath the bandages lay protective amulets and pieces of jewellery. The Ankh symbol was always used in these painting as well because it was the symbol of life. There were 17 model boats found in the tomb and these boats were similar to those which bore the dead pharaohs across the Nile. Tutankhamun's actual coffin was filled with many objects that had great importance. Tutankhamun's body had been wrapped wearing necklaces and rings. The sun was also recognised to be a very important symbol because it symbolised the god Ra, who was the creator of life. The body of Tutankhamun was laid in three coffins one inside the other and they were inlaid with canaline, lapis lazuli and gold. Ancient Egyptians believed that because of the damage tomb robbers caused to a pharaoh's tomb, the occupant's hopes of eternal life were destroyed. The objects found in the antechamber gave invaluable information about the role of the pharaoh in New Kingdom times, and it reinforced the image that Tutankahmun was a warrior, great athlete and a high priest.
