Tyrone Willingham

Tyrone Willingham, who last year accepted the job of head football coach at Notre Dame University, broke a sort of "color barrier" at the school. He became the first African-American to coach the Irish in any sport. Tyrone Willingham has been in the coaching business for 28 years. He has spent time as an assistant coach for Michigan State and was a running backs coach for the NFL Minnisota Vikings. He started out as the assistant coach at Stanford before he took the head coaching job there. At Stanford he spent 7 years building up the Cardinal team. He took Stanford to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1972 and also his teams first Conference Championship in ten years. He was very successful in this career at Stanford University. Tyrone though always had his eye on a big name coaching


" Though he left a good program for his dream job, he made another impact not only in his life, but the lives of others. There was a lingering stereotype that the University is racist. Thought he did not say exactly why it was important, everybody knew the point coach Willingham was trying to make. Notre Dame is known throughout the world as a great university for both athletics and academics, but there has been a shadow that was caste over the University. When Tyrone Willingham accepted the job, in his press conference one of the first things he said was that "It was important for me to take this job. Notre Dame declined any sort of racism on their part in saying that there was no reason for not having an African American as a head coach. Notre Dame went on a search to find the best man for the coaching vacancy and that would lead them to there past glory. Tyrone Willingham is one of the great men in sports and will go down in history with what he has done. " He took this job not only because it is the most prestigious job in all sports, but to continue to break down the color barrier. It was a big step for Tyrone Willingham to take this job and he is getting praise from the black community for it. job and when Notre Dame fired their head coach after a pair of horrible seasons, he knew that was his dream job. So on December 21st 2001 he got the chance to prove himself to the football community that he was a great coach. In taking the head coaching position he fulfilled a dream of his. Along with that there had never been a head coach of any sort at the school, in which that person was African-American.
