Eleanor Wimbish: Letter to her son.

While the soldiers were stationed in Vietnam all they had was each other. In the beginning of her letter to her son Eleanor Wimbish writes, "I used to wonder how scared and home sick you must have been in that strange country called Vietnam. And if how it might have changed you" here she questions if her son was among any friends in a country where the Americans where the enemies. The key part of that statement though is "used to think", after Eleanor got in contact with Billy's friend from Michigan who was stationed with him in Vietnam she realized that the soldiers among themselves where a family. Billy's friend from Michigan told her how her son had remained the same happy go lucky guy, that he was not faded by the effects of was, while others were getting angrier and angrier. In her letter to her son she writes what her sons friend told her, "How your warmth and friendliness drew the guys to you. How your (lieutenant) gave you the nickname of "Spanky", and soon your group, Jim included, were al

As in Eleanor Wimbish's case, the name etched into the wall was where she could contact her son, her form of contact was through letters. She needed someone to talk to for no one would let her talk about the tragedy. To friends and family of a person whose name is on the wall, the wall has a lot more to offer them , than just a reminder of the Vietnam war. " Eleanore realized that her letters to her son at the wall were an inspiration for people all over the world who have lost loved ones. She had lost her daughter, her only child, a year ago. Her letters were a way for Eleanore to release her pain that she has from the death of her son at Vietnam, while the mother of the girl who died needed someone to talk to to release her pain , and that someone was Eleanore. To most of the people the names etched on the wall, mean nothing more than just a reminder of what happened in Vietnam. The name of a loved one etched on this dark granite wall, and the memories that a loved one contains for the person whose name is on the wall, is all that is left for them. As they stand by the wall, their body motionless other than their finger rubbing over the name, eyes closed as if they are in a different world; a world with their loved one still alive. The granite is cold and dark, but to a loved one the touch is warm and filled with memories. She wrote, " I cried for this heartbroken mother, after I hung up the phone, I laid my head down and cried as hard for her. There are others though that just want to touch the name of their loved one. In the letter to her son eleanore Wimbish writes, "Later that same day I received a phone call from a mother in Billings montana.
