School Uniforms: To Wear or Not to Wear

Many students feel pressure before they even leave for school. It starts when they are choosing what to wear. This decision is very important because the appearance of one's self to his or her peers is of the greatest importance. The use of school uniforms has been a controversial issue among students for many years. The adoption of school uniform policies can promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment and assist financially challenged students. With the instillation of school uniform policies, schools are more safe and orderly; violence and theft decline. In Long Beach California crime went down thirty-six percent. Fights and possession of dangerous weapons declined by half. Truancy and vandalism also declined (Cellucci 1). When students are made to dress in uniforms there is not a distraction from revealing clothing that often appears in the hallways of many public schools. "School climate is improved because students feel they "fit in" better when they look like everyone else" (Eppinger 2). By wearing a uniform students are able to stay more focused and disciplined throughout the day. The cost of designer clothing and name brand footwear can be very expensive. Clothes divide students into competing cliques, which destroys school spirit. Students who cannot be fashionable due to limited family finances feel more comfortable among peers when wearing a uniform. Students spend more time concentrating on their work, instead of what their peers are wearing, when everyone is dressed the same. In Long Island, California, which was the first major public school district in the country to adopt a uniform policy, even though uniforms were voluntary, less than one percent of students decide not to wear them (Cellucci 1). In most cases, three school uniforms can be purchased for under a hundred dollars. Students feel they are part of a team by wearing a uniform. Former President Clinton once said the he supported school uniforms "if it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets"(Pro side 1). students are preoccupied with how they look and what they wear, instead of their schoolwork. In Kansas City, Missouri, students receive their uniforms at no cost. The evidence from schools where students wear uniforms shows they work.
