School Uniforms: To Wear or Not to Wear

             Many students feel pressure before they even leave for school. It starts when they are choosing what to wear. This decision is very important because the appearance of one's self to his or her peers is of the greatest importance. The use of school uniforms has been a controversial issue among students for many years. The adoption of school uniform policies can promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment and assist financially challenged students.
             With the instillation of school uniform policies, schools are more safe and orderly; violence and theft decline. In Long Beach California crime went down thirty-six percent. Fights and possession of dangerous weapons declined by half. Truancy and vandalism also declined (Cellucci 1). Intruders into school buildings are noticed more quickly and easier when students and teachers are all dressed similar. If uniforms are instilled gang type clothing is eliminated.
             Schools have become the stage for the latest fashion; consequently, attention is deflected from learning and achieving educational goals. Many students are preoccupied with how they look and what they wear, instead of their schoolwork. By wearing a uniform students are able to stay more focused and disciplined throughout the day. Students spend more time concentrating on their work, instead of what their peers are wearing, when everyone is dressed the same. Uniforms create a more business-like atmosphere, because kids view them as "work" clothes rather than "play" clothes. By dressing more professionally students are inclined to act more maturely and more responsibly (Eppinger 3). When students are made to dress in uniforms there is not a distraction from revealing clothing that often appears in the hallways of many public schools.
