Tietam Brown Critique
The book "Tietam Brown" was written by two time New York Times best selling author, Mick Foley. The novel is his third book, and his first fiction. His first two books, "Have A Nice Day!: A Tale of Blood and Sweat Socks" and "Foley is Good: And the Real World is Faker Than Wrestling" are autobiographies about his life and career in the world of professional wrestling. "Tietam Brown" is his first attempt at writing fiction, and a tremendous success. Foley mixes a blend of immature humor, teenage emotions and a very disturbing look at the perversions that, while not always in the mainstream, is definably evident in the modern day world. He makes his characters easy to connect to, by putting them into situations that while most people have not had, are easy to relate to. Foley also uses a very unique style of writing that allows him to put a humorous point to even the darkest situations, and make the reader feel like they are being told the story from the point of the main character. An example of this is found in "Her hand was entwined with mine, in what was the most romantic moment of my life, with all due respect to the two young men who tried to forcibly sodomize me during my stay at the Petersburg Home for Boys."[pg12]. The sto
The author presents his characters very well. Although a more advanced reader or someone who just takes a great interest in the book could finish it in one night. One day Andy was being harassed by Clem Baskin, and when he had the chance to mention his fathers sexual exploits with Mrs. The story starts off after a date with the high school cheer leading captain Terri Johnson. Andy's dad, often referred to as Tietam, is something of a mysterious figure in the early parts of the novel. Baskin asked him to never tell anyone about it. Andy had been recently reunited with his dad, who like Andy is named Antietam Brown IV. Andy's life goes from that of pure joy, to sadness and Foley makes that transition swiftly, but manages to keep the story very realistic and believable. But the message the story delivers in the end is that, while life often presents people with hardships, life can always get better. From falling in love, having his father open up to him, and finally having a sense of family again, to having his heart broken, his father revert back to his old ways, and a woman he considered a mother, disappearing without a trace. Many people have never heard of Mick Foley, or have simply dismissed him as a dumb wrestler, however, after having two New York Times number one best selling books, an incredible novel and now, three children's books having been released, he is surely to become the next great American author. There has not been a sequel released, nor has there been one planned. The message in the story is not fully clear the whole way through.
