Is the Modern Woman All Made Up?

            Advertisement relies on the use of languages and tone to persuade people to feel a certain way and hence would behave in a manner that they normally would not in the absence of the advertisement. Advertising is used to promote goods, services, images, and anything else that advertisers want to publicize. It is becoming a major part of mass media. At times we may view it positively, at other times we may just simply ignore it. In order to attract an audience, advertisers use various techniques in their advertisement to make people aware of the firm's products, services or brands. Although the methods used by advertisers are infinite, they have a common goal, to persuade those who may become their potential customers.
             We live in a fast paced society that is ruled by mass media. Everyday we are bombarded by images of perfect bodies, beautiful hair, flawless skin, and ageless faces that flash at us like a slide show. These ideas and images are imbedded in our minds throughout our lives. Advertisements select audiences openly and subliminally, and target them with their product. They allude to the fact that in order to be associated like the people in the advertisement you must use their product.
             This is not a new approach, nor is it unique to this generation, but never before has it been so widely used as it is today. There is an old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words" and what better way to tell someone about a product than a short commercial.
             The 'woman' of today can never be too slim or too pretty "appearance, age, and abilities play a large role, too, in how we view our own identity. Any factors that set us apart, from physical differences to genius, can cause feelings of pride or at times alienation" (Ann Raimes).
