Is the Modern Woman All Made Up?
Advertisement relies on the use of languages and tone to persuade people to feel a certain way and hence would behave in a manner that they normally would not in the absence of the advertisement. Advertising is used to promote goods, services, images, and anything else that advertisers want to publicize. It is becoming a major part of mass media. At times we may view it positively, at other times we may just simply ignore it. In order to attract an audience, advertisers use various techniques in their advertisement to make people aware of the firm's products, services or brands. Although the methods used by advertisers are infinite, they have a common goal, to persuade those who may become their potential customers. We live in a fast paced society that is ruled by mass media. Everyday we are bombarded by images of perfect bodies, beautiful hair, flawless skin, and ageless faces that flash at us like a slide show. These ideas and images are imbedded in our minds throughout our lives. Advertisements select audiences openly and subliminally, and target them with their product. The media teaches them what is attractive, feminine, cool, sexy, or romantic. The message of what women should look like is everywhere. The 'woman' of today can never be too slim or too pretty "appearance, age, and abilities play a large role, too, in how we view our own identity. For example, a fat person may be viewed as lazy, greedy or lacking self-control. However, you also got women returning to the home at the end of the war, women being the secondary earners or only unmarried women still allowed keeping their jobs. Women in the work force are held accountable for having children. Furthermore, when the war ended, men returned to their old jobs taking it back. Parents may provide verbal instructions and restrictions, but teenagers no longer learn through this primary mode of communication. One question that comes to mind is, where do these competitive characteristics originate? As in the words of Oscar Wilde, " it is shallow people who do not judge by appearances. Women are given the message that if they just work hard enough at dieting and exercise, they can be thin, beautiful and happy. This manipulation of perception on what is 'ideal' leads to concern in relation to the teenagers of this country. The television set has become one of the most influential technologies of all time, replacing real role models and teachers. Nature has designed women to have children, not men, it was not the woman's choice to be the bearer of children, and it is just nature. However, commercials like Nike with their suggestive images accompanied with great music get a better response.
