Money Talks

             Did you know that the top paid teams in the league are always in first or second place? The New York Yankees, the top paid team, has won the most World Series of any baseball team. "[They] led the major leagues [in salary] with an average of nearly $4 million" (Blum 1). Furthermore, these teams are the most expensive to watch. Ticket prices have skyrocketed over the last ten years because the owners must have enough money to play their athletes. Thus, the fans are the ones who end up paying them. Also, the taxpayers must contribute money in order to pay for new stadiums, which cost millions of dollars to build. These negative effects are draining all of the fun out of sports. Sports competition is decreasing while fans continue to pay more money. Because of the negative effects of consumers such as high ticket prices, excessive pay, and increased taxes, the salaries of professional athletes should be limited.
             Ticket prices have risen for several reasons such as new stadiums and increases in salary. Even major league baseball whose ticket prices are the lowest of the three major sports have gone up from 8.64 to 16.65, an increase of 92.7% since the year 1991. In 1991, an average NFL ticket would cost $25.21 but nowadays it would cost a whopping $45.63. For a family of four, it would cost them $266.6 on average to attend an NBA game. Which is a 10% increase from the average in 1991. This includes two adult tickets, two low priced child tickets, four drinks, four hot dogs, two programs and two hats(McGraw 2). Athletes behaviors on and off of the field are becoming worse each year. Their actions off the field as well as on are driving away parents from taking their children to watch the athletes. More and more athletes are spending most of their time in court instead of on the court.
