My Oedipus Complex

The appreciation of Frank O'Connor 's work is continually undercut by his subjects personal feelings (James Matthews 1983). This is clearly seen in his short story "My Oedipus Complex". Frank O'Connor wrote 150 short stories, novels, plays, poetry, and two autobiographies. Frank O'Connor was born in Cork City September 17, 1903. He did several literary criticisms and translations from Irish but is best known for his short stories. In his autobiography "An Only Child" he describes his father Mick O'Donovan as an abusive drunkard. His mother Minnie he writes of being saintly and strong in her ability to support the family. As a child he read voraciously deepening his love for Irish Culture, causes, and political independence. Realizing the importance of education he taught himself French and German but always considered Ireland his homeland. He fought in the 1921-22 civil war on the side of the Republicans. In 1

Larry finds his father in his bed to escape the crying of Sonny. His jealousy with his father is shown in many ways. The character "Oedipus" is portrayed in Frank O'Connor's story "My Oedipus Complex" by the young boy Larry. Larry grew up with just his mother while his father was away at war. One of the many twists of this story, is when the new baby Sonny is born. Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud created the Oedipus complex. His work has been published in Sicily, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Japan, France, and Germany. This loss of attention is expressed in his irritation, sulkiness, and jealousy toward his father. He missed his teatime and morning talks with his mother. This statement coming from the one, who has taken his mothers affection away, was a declaration of full war.
