Violent consequences in hip hop

The past decade there has been an emergence of controversial music in American pop culture. Hip hop music is a dominant force in the music industry and now more than ever has lyrics that contain violence such as rape, murder, and drug and gun usage. Listeners, especially the teenage audience, have boosted some of the most violent lyrical records to the top of the Billboard Charts. Albums such as The Slim Shady LP, where rapper Eminem speaks of killing his wife and drowning her in a lake, stayed at the number one spot for multiple weeks. Does the violence in music affect young minds to act more aggressively or is it the environment the teenager is surrounded by? One reason used by rappers and musicians for there violent music is that it is the environment they were brought up in. This is not a fair reason for teenage boys who used guns in a violent rampage in a rural or suburban area. Hip hop music is part of pop culture and similar to rock and roll, there will be many teenagers and young adults that are affected by the music. Music acts as a sere gate public authority similar to a parent, in which children and teenagers will act upon what is said through the lyrics of songs. Lyrics act as a method of violence and its listeners fee


rappers, and politicians soon became involved in the culture. Music does take an exaggeration into their personal accounts. Carnagey, which violent songs were used to show the effects of behavior. In the early 90s hip hop hit main stream with Gangsta Rap, which is a genre of hip hop from New York's counterpart L. ls the effects of this music through other forms of violence such as anger, crime, or even more violence through words. Before the early 90s gangster rap hit the hip hop main scene, the music in essence was about the struggles of living in low income housing, being an African American youth and about partying with their friends. The other side of the spectrum is that the people who write violent lyrics do experience it in their lives. The lyrics of violence were noticed by the government and by nation's youth. This is a soft example of what is out there but is very distinct in its content. Veterans of the Vietnam War fought in heroic manners similar to the movies and pop culture of the day, a John Wayne aura of masculinity and of those veterans who had abusive or aggressive parents, they became aggressive and war hungry themselves. Pop culture teaches its lessons to the children everyday and has longer class periods than teachers do. Teenagers in 1999 bought The Slim Shady LP in platinum amounts. It started in a low income area of the South Bronx, NY, but the artists originally spoke of stopping youth violence and political and economic hope.
