Ceasar Chavez

             Cesar Estrada Chavez founded and led the first successful farm workers' union in history. When he passed away on April 23, 1993, he was president of the United Farm Workers.
             i. Born March 31 1927 near Yuma, Arizona
             ii. Age 10-father losses house and land.
             iii. 1939 Settles to East San Jose (Sal Si Puedes)
             iv. Worked fields in California. (Oxnard, Atascadero, King City, Salinas, Delano...)

             i. Fred Ross- Organizer of CSO (Community Service Organization)
             b. Battling racial and economic discrimination against Chicano residence
             c. Organizing CSO chapters across Ca. & Arizona
             iii. CSO national leader late 1950's till early 1960's
             i. Tried to convince CSO to commit to farm worker organizing
             iii. National Farm Workers Association (NFWA)
             v. " If you're outraged at conditions, then you can't possibly be free or happy until you devote all your time to changing them and do nothing but that" "But you cant change anything if you want to hold onto a good job, a good way of life and avoid sacrifice."
             i. Started a five-year boycott on Delano grape growers with an AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor & Congress of Industrial Organization) sponsored union
             ii. Two unions merge to form the UFW (United Farm Workers)
             a. From the beginning UFW carried principles of non-violence.
             b. Created a flag with the Aztec Eagle " A symbol is an important thing, that is why we choose the Aztec Eagle. It gives pride.... When people see it they know it means dignity"
             c. 25 day fast in 1968 to reaffirm the UFW's commitment to non-violence.
