From Tranquility to Turmoil
Just like millions of others in the world today, the character in this story chooses totake his normal, seemingly tranquil life, and turn it upside down. He has a good wife who loves him dearly, a good home, and his dearest friend, a black cat named Pluto. We know he has to be making a fairly descant living because he has a servant, and he has the means to go out drinking every night. So what is making him throw away his life in such a horrific manner? The same thing that causes people to loose every thing, including their sense-of-being, and even their sanity.....Alcohol. The story doesn't tell us why the character started drinking, that's any ones guess. We really don't know very much at all about the person accept the fact that he went insane. Just like most Alcoholics, this character suf
Truth be known, his alcoholic ways, his anger, and lack of judgment are the cause of the bite. Our character isn't a sane man any more. His thought pattern hasn't always been this twisted, but alcohol has a funny way of turning reality into dilution. At this point we see the man taken over by a demon that will destroy anything in its path. He brings the cat home only to learn that he hates it. Even after the police find his wife's body, due to the cats screams from inside the wall, he still refuses to accept any responsibility for his actions. He kills his wife in the most brutal fashion, and walls her up in the basement. Next we see the quick temper and clouded judgment go from spurts of irrational thought to pure insanity. If he would stop the drinking he would probably discover what that emptiness is, and how to fill it. In this story the character puts the blame on a cat that ,in his subconscious mind, he believes to be a witch. He considers Pluto to be his most beloved pet, yet he cuts the cats eye out just because it bites him. Shortly after the death of Pluto, a fire destroys his house and every thing in it. Ironic isn't it? The story ends with self-destruction of Poe's character. The only thought in his mind is how peaceful it is without the cat around. This emptiness may be the reason Poe's character started drinking in the first place.
