Since dry, scaly skin seems to be the major concern among woman today, what better way to represent this problem than with a scaly reptile? In an ad from the magazine Ladies Home Journal of October 2002, Lubriderm moisturizing lotion does just this. In the background of the ad a larger than life sized alligator is towering over a woman sitting carelessly in her designer chair. Her long legs hang over the side of the chair while she stares up at the alligator with a worry-free expression. White areas of the ad surround them both and a shadow is cast from the alligator. On the bottom of the ad is a small bottle of the lotion and a green colored caption to the left of the bottle that states, “Dry skin is one thing
. . .
Beauty and the beast is the focal point of the ad with Lubriderm as the weapon for beauty to be triumphant. A large caption is located at the top where the legs cross reading “Now you can shave your legs half as often. At the bottom of the page in bold lettering is the name of the product with a small caption under it reading “Discover nature’s secret for healthy skin. The photo of the woman in the ad is appealing in a way that the product will leave women not only feeling clean but will relieve them of dry skin all day long. ” A space at the bottom between the shapely calves and the lotion bottle is where the description is located. She appears to be sitting on a fabric-covered bench that matches the color scheme of the lotion bottle located on the lower left of the page. They also used a secondary tactic that refers to a natural nutrient contained in their products to represent a bond with the healing power of nature. This product also describes a healing ingredient called soy protein that may not be commonly found in regular lotions. Within the light tan white areas of the ad are water colored oat leaves, similar to those on the bottle of wash.
