Injury

To many kids who play sports, not being able to play because of an injury, can seem like an eternity to them. I was one of those kids. When the doctor told me that I was going to be out for 6-8 weeks because I broke my ankle, I became very upset. Playing sports has meant so much to me that I never thought about what I would do if I got injured. I always dreamt of making that winning touchdown, or sacking the quarterback to end the game. All I wanted to be was the best player in the game. I worked really hard to reach this goal, so I could not imagine what it was going to feel like when I had to sit on the sidelines and watch my team play without me.

For the next 6-8 weeks I had to figure out what to do other than play football. It didn’t matter to me what the doctor said, I wanted to play. My heart, my body, everything was in football, maybe even more than a lot of other players. It also didn’t matter to me that the doctor had a degree and knew what was best for me, but I was going to be back before 6-8 weeks and I was determined to do so. I went to every single practice, to show my dedication and to suppo

. . .

” I finally got my cast off and I was so happy to see my leg again and not the cast. I got it back when there were four games left in the season. I went to the football games as much as I could, and I even got to be on the sideline and act as an assistant coach. This really made me happy because it made me feel like I was actually important , and I wasn’t forgotten by my teammates, even though I wasn’t out on the field busting my ass with them. After about a month the coaches and players started to call me coach.

My mother had told me that 6-8 weeks would go by fast, if I kept myself busy. ”

As I walked into the office the nurse said, “hello” and “wait here and I‘ll get the doctor for you. I felt free again and I couldn’t wait to get back out on the field, but first I had to train to make my ankle stronger. Every time I look at the cast it always seems to remind me of what had happened and I can remember the incident like it was yesterday. I used what I had learned in practice and in games to help coach my teammates and gave my opinions. I got to start in the final four games and I played the best that I can remember.

Finally, when I went back to the doctor’s office to get my cast off, I could hardly contain my excitement.

For the rest of the season I had to fight to get my starting position back.
