Sodoma Giovanni Antonio Bazzi
Name: Sodoma Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (Italian Sienese)Title: Christ Presented to the People (Ecce Homo)Sodoma was trained in Lombardy, but most of his career was spent in Siena, where he was, together with Beccafumi, the major figure. This work dates from the last decade of his life. The use of contrasting figure types of sfumato derives his study of the words of Leonardo da Vinci and has a powerful emotive effect. The turbaned figure is Pilate, who presents the resigned but dignified Christ to the viewer as an object of contemplation. The paintings have sfumato effects. The term refers to the subtle transition of tones from light to dark in oil painting. The lighting for the people in the back is not the same as the lighting towards the people in the front. The sadness that I felt as I stood in front of the painting that represented Jesus being prosecuted for our sins was intense. Jesus has the most glowing effect while Pilate and Judas just have very little lighting. Light is being cast on Jesus as opposed to the shadow being cast on other people surrounding Him. There is no background to the painting. It also showed me that in the 15th century, most of the paintings, sculptures and frescos were based on religion. I was drawn into this painting because it reminded me of when it was the first time that I watched the story "Jesus of Nazareth" with my parents. Judas and Pilate's facial expressions are very calm and careless. On the left, it looks to me as if he was Judas, one who betrayed Jesus Christ by being dishonest and committing treachery.
