Chris Rock: A Summary of

             In his article, "Chris Rock: Seriously Funny", Christopher John Farley looks into the life of comedian Chris Rock. The author investigates what makes Chris Rock "the funniest man in America" (184). The investigation of Chris Rock's career leads all the way back to grade school. Although it wasn't his profession at the time, it was his way of dealing with things. He couldn't fight so he would tell jokes instead. That is how Chris Rock's huge comedy career started. Later he turned his comedy into a career that he is very successful at. His ability to make jokes about nearly every subject is truly a gift that he takes full advantage of. Chris Rock gets his fame by pushing the limits by joking about topics that others have been afraid to joke about. Rock has used his comedy to get roles in movies and even his own TV show. While Rock is unpredictable and controversial, he is always funny.
             Chris Rock discovered that he had a talent for making people laugh when he was in school. When he didn't get a long with someone he would make jokes rather than fight because, as Farley explains, "Rock... is a comic, not a fighter" (184). He wasn't intending on making people laugh at the time, it just happened. He realized he had a talent there and he worked it into what is now his career. This point must mean a great deal to Farley because he retells this story of Rock's school days in the middle of his article. After reading the reasons why Rock may be the best comic in America, this fact may be even more impressive. It's a good use of repetition. It serves to stress the importance of Rock's early discovery for his talent.
             Rock brought a new twist to comedy. He was bold and gutsy. He had enough chutzpah to tell jokes about touchy social issues that many thought were a little too touchy to joke about. That was what made Rock's comedy so unique and...
